You can’t visit the Getty Museum in California right now thanks to the coronavirus lockdown, but fear not art lovers, because now you have another way to visit. Although virtual and rather pixelated.

Thanks to Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ custom designs feature, it’s possible to upload designs created by other players – and the Getty has taken the opportunity to allow anyone to upload artwork from their collection ( thanks Polygon).

Over 70,000 artworks have been uploaded to Getty’s Animal Crossing Art Generator, where users can search for specific artwork or painters, crop the artwork, and convert it into an easily downloadable QR code for Animal Crossing . Simply scan the QR code using the Nintendo Switch companion smartphone app, upload the design via your NookPhone, and bang – Van Gogh’s on your wall. It is even possible to download artwork from other museums using IIIF (technology used by museums and art galleries to show art online).

This one’s for you, Blathers.

Obviously there are limits to how this works: the artwork is quite low resolution, and you can only upload paintings in a square crop, which means you can’t have some of the sculptures and exhibits. wacky things that you would usually find in a gallery. Still, it’s a good idea to involve players in the art world, and I’m considering starting my own gallery to entertain my friends. That should keep me busy until a catchable pollock comes into season.
